Orpheus @ The Lyceum Theatre, Crewe View map - The Lyceum Theatre Permanent link

Orpheus

Created by Alexander Wright (The Flanagan Collective) and Phil Grainger (Gobbledigook), Orpheus is an internationally award winning show wound together from hair-raising spoken word and soaring soul music.

It’s a modern retelling of the ancient myth, transporting us through dive bars, back streets and late night karaoke. It’s a show about falling in love, about seismic shifts in your everyday life, and about how far we’d want to go to save those we hold so near and dear. It’s a 5,000 year old story, but told for us, here, now. Performed by a storyteller and a musician, the tale is wound together from a guitar and a book, and the audience. Told through a fusion of hair raising spoken word and original, live, soulful music, Orpheus sits in between spoken word poetry, an acoustic gig and a theatre show.

We created Orpheus to play anywhere and everywhere. The show premiered in the garden of a Dutch cheese shop in Cromarty. Since then it’s played in houses, pubs, halls, shops, tunnels, libraries, foyers, bars, empty lofts and - very occasionally - a theatre.

Orpheus won Best Theatre (weekly) award at the Adelaide Fringe and the Summerhall Award at VAULT Festival.

Presented by Cheshire Rural Touring Association.

Something About Simon @ The Lyceum Theatre, Crewe View map - The Lyceum Theatre Permanent link

Something About Simon

Something About Simon- The Life and Songs of Paul Simon Through Gary Edward Jones.

Paul Simon is a name that has cemented itself into the hearts and minds of audiences all over the world. As an artist, his name has become synonymous, not only with music, but with cultural history.

In this brand-new show, singer-songwriter Gary Edward Jones not only recites the music of one of his idols, but also tells the unique story of Paul Simon combining visuals, stage design and, of course, the music.

With classic ballads like The Sound of Silence, America and Kathy’s Song, to the more upbeat Me And Julio, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Wristband, to the much-loved Bridge Over Troubled Waters. The show will have you both reliving and rediscovering these great songs again.

After years of comparisons, Gary set out on a journey of discovery and for over two years, he lived and breathed all things Simon, creating a show which has received five-star reviews and standing ovations across the UK and is heading to Edinburgh Fringe this summer.

A natural storyteller, with charisma and a certain charm, Gary weaves together songs and stories that cross the Atlantic, from New Jersey to the North-West of England. He traces the sometimes-poignant moments in Simon’s life and career, that occasionally mirror his own.

Something About Simon is not a tribute show; it is one musician authentically honouring the music of another. For around ninety minutes, allow Gary Edward Jones to take you back to those days and tell you Something About Simon.

Gary Edward Jones held the audience with a captivated awe… he is special, extraordinary. Liverpool Sound and Vision *****
Something About Simon…there is something about Jones that lingers. Reviewer Number 9 *****
